At the beginning of 2004, we had become debt-free and decided it was time to buy our second home. We were very conscious of Mishkin's difficulty living in one place for a long time, so we tried to think carefully about what we both wanted in a home and what things might help Mishkin want to stay in one place for a long time.

We decided that proximity to friends and family was the most important criteria. We have friends and family all over the place, so we considered a number of cities in Canada and the U.S. but the majority of our friends and family live in the GTA (Toronto area) so that was where we were going to look. Mishkin's best friend lived in Stouffville and the Baha'i community there was small and could really use some more Baha'is so we decided that that would be a good place to settle down and call home.

Mishkin has always wanted to own "land". So we decided to try to look for a house with a bit of land. We then proceeded to design a custom built home for a forested 2 acre lot. Our budget was tight for a custom built home, so we had to really think hard about how we use space and exactly what rooms we needed and where. We spent months carefully analyzing how much space would be comfortable. The placement of rooms for ease of homeschooling and looking after three kids while housekeeping. We were really happy and excited about the plan we came up with.

When we were negotiating the final cost with the builder, we looked at similar houses on the market to get a feel for fair maket value. We came to see the house we would eventually buy and it was scary how similar it was to what we had designed for ourselves. I actually got tingly goosebumps several times. It was like seeing our entire dream house wish list appear magically in front of us. It was a little weird. When we finished looking at the house, we got in the car and just sat there silent for a few moments and then looked at each other stunned. We both knew. We both knew that this was our home. I strongly believe that our souls are not bound by linear time. We entered this home and could feel the memories. The house was familiar to my soul. I have lived here and in physical linear time, I will live here. It was our home.
