Books
Age: Birth - 5
Baby Faces
By Margaret Miller
Large pictures of
baby faces. Large print exclamations like “yucky” or “uh-oh” accompanies
a variety of facial expressions. Very appropriate as a first book for
babies. All of my children were captivated by this book from birth.
Miss Spider's Tea Party:The Counting Book
By David Kirk
A spider tries to invite other
bugs to a tea party. All the other bugs
are afraid to be eaten and run away until one day, Miss Spider helps
a moth with wet wings. The next day eleven
bugs come to her tea party.
A counting book up to twelve. Very colourful illustrations. My children
loved this book from birth. I think the vibrant colours attracted them.
Miss
Spider's ABC and Miss Spider's New Car were not
as well liked as this one.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
By Eric Carle
A book about the life cycle
of
a caterpillar to a butterfly. Days of the week and names of food
are also introduced. All of my children
loved this book. My two-year-old memorized it and started to “read” it
to me every night.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
By Eric Carle
A rhyming, repetitive book excellent for
young children. It teaches
colours and
animals. Yet another all time favourite
with each of my children.
Ten Little Ladybugs
By Melanie Gerth
One by one, ten bumpy
plastic ladybugs disappear from the story. The book rhymes. You can
touch and count the ladybugs at the same time.
Goodnight Moon
By Margaret Wise Brown
A young rabbit says, "Goodnight" to
all the things in his room. A rhyming
book. One of my daughter's favourites.
Tails
By Matthew Van Fleet
A fun touch and feel book. Though the
swishing pigs tail has been ripped off (as
babies do). My daughter also asks for this
book over and over again.
Touch and Feel Wild Animals
By DK
A good variety of textures and fun
animals.
The Mitten:
A Ukrainian Folktale
By Jan Brett
A boy named Nicki
loses a white mitten in the snow. Many forest animals seek refuge from
the cold inside the mitten.
A sneeze causes all the animals and
the mitten to go flying. The boy finds his mitten again. His grandmother is
confused by the larger size of one of the mittens. Funny and cute story. My
kids love it. Beautiful detailed illustrations. A good book for a snowy winter
day.
Goodnight,
Gorilla
By Peggy Rathmann
Animals from a zoo follow the zookeeper
home to bed.
