Furniture Eco-friendly furniture is made from recycled, renewable or sustainble resources. Recycled or reclaimed materials from demolition sites. There is now a fabulous new particle board made from wheat straw (which is usually burned in the fields after harvesting wheat). There is also particle board made from bamboo or sustainably harvested wood. Bamboo is a plant that grows really fast and is therefore a renewable resource. Hardwoods can be sustainably harvested when new trees are planted in their stead. The upholstery can be of hemp or organic cotton (though they're harder to find and quite expensive). Or you can use organic cotton futons. Eco-friendly furniture reduces the toxins in your interior environment (as well as the exterior). Another factor to consider when buying consumer products is fair trade and human rights. Was child labour used to make that gorgeous Persian rug in your living room? Did you encourage the kidnapping of children when buying that beautiful rug? There are options that guarantee humans did not suffer to provide you with material objects you actually don't even need. It makes me happy to support ethical and environmental practices when I buy new furniture. Resources Eco-Furniture Green Design Studio Naked Furniture Grassroots Environmental
