Justice's Grade 6 Year September 2009 - June 2010 Okay, it's been a while since I wrote about how our homeschooling is going. I can't remember Grade 4. In Grade 5, we decided to try doing creative writing instead of spelling and grammar lessons. Justice's spelling and grammar are very good just from reading so much, so I thought we could continue with something more fun. But Justice found it difficult to find something to write about. At one point, he tried writing a novel and we talked about that process and he started to write the first few chapters but it didn't go further than that. So in Grade 6, we returned to our old Spelling and Grammar curriculums (Spelling Workout and Easy Grammar Systems) and he is much happier with that. In Grade 5, we also switched the kids to a schedule with time slots for each subject. They are now old enough and responsible enough to stay focused and watch the clock for when the next lesson starts. Here is a pdf of Justice's schedule ths year: Justice's Weekly School Schedule for 2010 Every day starts with Math and Grammar. After lunch, we do either Science or History and then Spelling and Reading. Art is every Thursday instead of Spelling. This schedule has been working wonderfully and we have continued with it. We found that it only took half an hour to do Grammar and Spelling. So, we changed the schedule in the morning to 1 1/2 hours of Math followed by half an hour of Grammar. And in the afternoons, he would take a break after finishing his Spelling early. In Grade 5, our history curriculum focused on Canadian history using the following books (this is actually called our Grade 3 History curriculum - we're a little behind): The Kids Book of Canadian History In Grade 6, our history curriculum focused on American history. (This is actually called our Grade 4 history curriculum) (Please see the pdf of my homeschooling curriculum found below for more details). By Grade 6, Justice had finished the Singapore Math curriculum including their Grade 6 books and was ready for Grade 7 math. We tried Singapore Math's Grade 7 curriculum (which is different from their curriculum for the lower grades) and didn't like it. So this year, we have switched to Teaching Textbooks Grade 7 curriculum and Justice likes it much better. So we will continue the upper grades using this curriculum. I also became organized enough this year to create a checklist of our entire curriculum (including all the books for children we have in our house placed in age appropriate locations on the list). So now, we can see on the list exactly where we are in the curriculum and which books we have yet to read. I also write on this the date on which a child completed that particular book. Here is a pdf of our homeschooling curriculum so far: Checklist for our complete homeschooling curriculum This curriculum is still a work in progress.
