Justice's Grade 3 Year

September 2006 - June 2007

Between September and December of 2006, Justice was going to Roger White Academy part-time and homeschooling part time (read Roger White Academy). Even though he was attending the school part time, he continued with his homeschooling curriculum. So he continued to use his Math, Spelling and Grammar program while he participated in the history, science, art, yoga and drama classes at the school.

In January of 2007, we went back to full time homeschooling. Justice has good self-discipline and gets his daily lessons done in a timely manner by himself. I correct his work daily and give him short personal tutorials in areas I feel he needs a stronger understanding (and of course answer any questions he may have while he's working).

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, his To Do List is as follows:

Grammar: one page of Easy Grammar Systems Workbook 34.
Math: one lesson from Singapore Math Level 3.
Grammar: a daily one page quick and easy review of what he's learning in grammar from Daily Gram Grade 3 (also from Easy Grammar Systems).
Art: one lesson from
Art Skills (the Crayon Set) which we purchased from Sonlight. We almost never got around to this lesson (I think we did it 3 times all year). But I'm not worried about this since he draws on his own almost daily.

Tuesday and Thursday, his To Do List is as follows:

History: two pages read from The Usborne Book of World History Justice writes a narration page about what he learned in his "Justice's Book of World History" which he is creating and a picture illustrating things he learned.
Math: one lesson from Singapore Math Level 3.
Grammar: a daily one page quick and easy review of what he's learning in grammar from Daily Gram Grade 3 (also from Easy Grammar Systems).
Spelling: one page of Spelling Workout Level C (Grade 3 Level). We rarely do the spelling tests now. I'm not concerned about his ability to spell. He is very good at spelling, grammar, and vocabulary simply through being a voracious reader.
Science: two or more pages read from The Usborne First Encyclopedia of Our World, The Usborne First Encyclopedia of Space, or Glow-in-the-Dark Constellations by Thompson. We often did not get to our science lessons. When we do, we often read six pages instead of two. I'm not concerned about this because he seems to have a good understanding of science for his age and we will focus on this more when he is older.

He also reads many books for pleasure throughout the day and night (often staying up past midnight). I no longer keep track of this. He read "Eragon" in 4 days. It is 503 pages long. He then proceeded to read it 3 times before I was able to get him the sequel "Eldest" which he has devoured in a similar fashion. I occasionally insist that he reads a book from the great list of literature from Sonlight (both read-alouds and readers). I do this to ensure that he has read the wonderful classics of literature that help to form our culture and to be exposed to a diversity of topics and genres of literature.

Mishkin occasionally enforces a daily foreign language lesson which is half an hour spent learning Mandarin using the Rosetta Stone Software on the computer.

Justice is also systematically memorizing the Hidden Words by Baha'u'llah. He also now recites the Short Obligatory prayer daily from memory and recites the Greatest Name 95 times a day. He now has morning prayers on his own privately. This is part of him developing a very personal relationship with God. Evening prayers are still said together as a family.

Justice completed the following curriculum during his
Grade 3 school year:

Math: Finished Singapore Math 3A and 3B.
Grammar: Finished Easy Grammar Systems Grade 3 and Daily Grams Grade 3.
Spelling: Finished Spelling Workout Level C
Science: Read The Usborne First Encyclopedia of Our World, The Usborne First Encyclopedia of Space, or Glow-in-the-Dark Constellations by Thompson.
History: Read Usborne's Book of World History from Greek Civilization until the present.
Music: Graduated from the Kindermusic Young Child program (this year he learned to play the dulcimer and recorder along with refining his skills on the glokenspiel).
Baha'i Children's Classes: 10 laws of the Kitab-i-Aqdas, Introduction to the Major World Religions.
