Grade One

September 2005 - June 2006

Haifa is only four years old and yet she is doing Grade 1 level school work. It's just the natural progression of the work she has done. Because she is so far ahead, I don't worry about doing school with her every day. I only do school with her once I have dealt with my other responsibilities and I feel I have space (emotional, physically, mentally) to do it. We often do school when Verity is taking a nap. Haifa has a To Do List that is very simple.

Monday to Thursday:

Reading: She reads to me a phonics reader from the series:

Now I'm Reading: Playful Pals (Level 1)
By Nora Gaydos
(click on the book to buy it at amazon.ca)

Now I'm Reading: Animal Antics (Level 1)
By Nora Gaydos
(click on the book to buy it at amazon.ca)

Now I'm Reading: Amazing Animals (Level 2)
By Nora Gaydos
(click on the book to buy it at amazon.ca)

Now I'm Reading: Snack Attack (Level 2)
By Nora Gaydos
(click on the book to buy it at amazon.ca)

Now I'm Reading: On the Go! (Level 3)
By Nora Gaydos
(click on the book to buy it at amazon.ca)

Now I'm Reading! Simply Science
By Nora Gaydos

Now I'm Reading! Math Madness

Or she reads to me a page from the I Can Read It series of phonics readers from Sonlight.
Math: one lesson from Singapore Math 1A
Writing: copying a page of Holy Writings that Mama has copied into her writing notebook. Her penmanship is so beautiful, it is often hard to decipher her writing from mine.

Friday:

History: two pages read from The Usborne Book of World History. Haifa dictates to me what she remembers from what
I read and I write it for her in her "Haifa's Book of World History" which she is creating and then she draws a picture illustrating things she learned.
Science: several pages read from The Usborne Complete First Book of Nature
Art: several pages read from the Come Look with Me series.

Haifa found Phonics Pathways too boring. She prefers reading books with sentences and a story line (as opposed to a list of words). She read 20 books from Nora Gaydos' Level 1 phonics readers in September 2005 (about a book a day). Haifa loves to draw almost every day. She loves to use markers and glitter paint pens. Haifa also does yoga with a DVD called YogaKids regularly. Haifa also loves to dance to music - she is very creative and exceptionally talented in this regard.

YogaKids
with Marsha Wenig
from Gaiam
An excellent yoga video for kids. There are
two others in the series which are also excellent.
We also have YogaKids3 Silly to Calm.

Haifa completed the following curriculum during her
Grade 1 school year (technically she should have been in Senior Kindergarten):

Math: Finished Singapore Math Earlybird Kindergarten 2B and Primary Math 1A.
Reading: She read Level 1 and 2 Early Readers by Nora Gaydos as well as many other Early Readers on her own. She also read the Frog and Toad series.
Writing: She initially did copy work but her handwriting is so beautiful I did not feel it was necessary to practice anymore. Especially once she started Spelling Workout A - I felt that those lessons was enough practice in handwriting.
Spelling: Began Spelling Workout A but have not completed the whole book (which is fine since it's a year advanced anyway).
Science: Read Usborne's First Book of Nature, Kingfisher First Human Body Encyclopedia, and began Let's Learn Science Year 1.
History: Read Usborne's Book of World History from the beginning until the Greek Civilization (the Ancient Civilizations).
Art: We read Come Look With Me: Enjoying Art with Children, A Child's Book of Art and learned some new drawing and colouring skills with Art Skills (the Crayon Set) which we purchased from Sonlight.
Music: We listened to CDs from Putumayo and their Kindermusic classes - sang and danced.
