Grade 1 (completed)
September 2006 -
June 2007
Between September
and December of 2006, Haifa was going to Roger White Academy
part-time and homeschooling part time (read Roger
White Academy).
Even though she was attending the school part time, she continued
with her homeschooling curriculum. So she continued to use
her Math, Spelling and Reading program while she participated in the
history, science, art, yoga and drama
classes at the school.
In January
of 2007, we went back to full time homeschooling. Haifa
learned how to read really well this year and her math is coming
along nicely.
I'm noticing that
both Haifa and Justice started Grade 1 a year early but then took 2
years to complete it. It must be that they need to achieve a certain
level of physical/brain development before being capable of moving
on. That's fine. I think with Verity, I will be less eager to start
school work at 3 years old. I'll let her be a little kid for longer.
Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday,
her To Do List is as follows:
Math: one lesson from Singapore
Math Level 1.
Spelling: one page of Spelling
Workout Level A.
Reading: Haifa would read me one book by Nora Gaydos. By the end of the
year I was asking her to read me 2 books a day.
Art: one lesson from Art
Skills (the Crayon Set) which we purchased from Sonlight. We
almost never got around to this lesson (I think we did it 3 times all
year).
But I'm not worried about this since she draws on her own very regularly.
Tuesday and
Thursday,
her To Do List is as follows:
History:
two pages read from The
Usborne Book of World History Haifa
dictates to me what she remembers from what I read and I write it for
her in her "Haifa's
Book of World History", then she draws a picture illustrating
things she learned.
Math: one lesson from Singapore
Math Level 1.
Grammar: one lesson from "English for the Thoughtful
Child" (recommended from the old version of "The Well-Trained Mind".)
Reading: Haifa would read me one or two books.
Science: two or more pages read from The Usborne
First Encyclopedia of Our World, The Usborne First Encyclopedia
of Space,
or Glow-in-the-Dark Constellations by Thompson. We often did
not get to our science lessons. When we do, we often read six pages
instead
of two. I'm not concerned about this because we will focus on this
more when she is older.
Haifa is also systematically memorizing
the Hidden Words by Baha'u'llah. She also now recites the Short
Obligatory prayer daily from memory and recites the Greatest Name 95 times
a day. Of her own initiative, she started to read and memorize prayers
from an adult prayer book. Her favourite prayer is: "O my God! I ask Thee,
by Thy most glorious Name, to aid me in that which will cause the affairs
of Thy servants to prosper, and Thy cities to flourish. Thou, indeed, hast
power over all things!" -Bahá'u'lláh
Haifa completed
the following curriculum during her second
Grade 1 school year:
Math: Finished
Singapore Math 1B.
Grammar: Completed half of English for the Thoughtful
Child.
Spelling: Finished
Spelling Workout A.
Reading: Finished
Level 3 and 4 of Nora Gaydos' Early Readers and began on Sonlights
Level 1 and Level 2 Readers.
Science: Read The
Usborne First Encyclopedia of Our World, The Usborne First Encyclopedia
of Space, or Glow-in-the-Dark Constellations by Thompson.
History: Read Usborne's Book of World History from
Greek Civilization until the present.
Music: Graduated from the Kindermusic Young Child
1 program (this year she learned to play the glokenspiel).
Baha'i Children's Classes: 10 laws of the Kitab-i-Aqdas, Introduction
to the Major World Religions.
