Recommended Resources
I use these resources
to learn technique and exciting taste combinations. I will sometimes
research five different versions of the same recipe and then combine
good ideas from each. I sometimes do taste-tests where I bake three
different recipes for a single dish on the same day and then compare
them to see which I like best.
Books
I have had many cookbooks
come and go through my kitchen. The following is a list of cookbooks
that I turn to over and over again.
Cookbooks that teach
about healthy cooking and also have tasty recipes:
Eating Alive by Dr.
Jonn Matsen N.D.
This book changed my life. I sometimes am appalled
by what people eat and then I have to remember that they are "normal"
and that I used
to eat that way without thinking about it (even thinking that it's
healthy) and that they havn't read this book yet! It's an easy read.
It explains how your digestive system works and how your body works
(nutrition in, waste out, homeostasis - the body's natural ability
to heal itself). It includes a 3-stage diet restricting foods that
are known to be common allergies. The diet is meant to help your body
regain it's ability to heal itself and communicate with you about the
food you're consuming. The recipes are tasty!
Eating Alive II by
Dr. Jonn Matsen N.D.
This book was written after Dr. Matsen discovered some additional important
elements to healing (removing heavy metals from the body). There are
more great recipes in this book that you won't want to miss.
The Healthy Kitchen by Andrew Weil, M.D. and Rosie Daley
Andrew Weil has written many books about health which I have found very
practical and useful. I've learned a lot from him. This is a nice
big cookbook full of healthy recipes. They are mind-blowingly delicious.
Our family is addicted to several of them. The book also has lots
of good advice about healthy eating, food preparation and storage.
Cooking the Whole
Foods Way by Christina Pirello
Christina Pirello cured herself of an acute form of leukemia. Given
by doctors three to six months to live at best, she turned to macrobiotic
cooking. Her recipes are delicious but some of the ingredients may
be foreign to you if you are new to healthy cooking.
Breaking the Vicious
Cycle by Elaine Gottschall
This book also explains the relationship between health
and digestion. It introduces the Specific Carbohydrate Diet which enables
the bodies
self-healing capacities to reawaken. The recipes are invaluable to those
with serious digestive health problems and who need gluten-free recipes.
Vegetarian Cooking
for Everyone by Deborah Madison
A great book to learn good cooking techniques, the right cooking tools,
and good taste combinations.
I don't think I've tried a single recipe from this book yet but I've learned
so much about HOW to cook from it.
The Barefoot Contessa
Cookbook by Ina Garten
The recipes are easy and unbelievably delicious. I frequently modify
these recipes to be more healthy. I love ALL her cookbooks!
Favorite Comfort
Food by Martha Stewart Living
Not healthy cooking but truly tasty recipes. Some of the recipes are
healthy, others can be modified to be more healthy.
Websites
The internet is so
full of wonderful resources that it seems silly to buy a lot of cookbooks
when you can get recipes for free! There are some cookbooks which I
have learned a lot from in terms of technique and philosophy of health.
And there are also some cookbooks where the majority of the recipes
are
mouth-watering
but
for the most part cookbooks are a waste of money. If you want to know
how to cook a particular dish, just do a Google search! I often type
in the name of the recipe or main ingredients I want to use and the
word "recipe". The following websites are my favourite places to browse
for new inspiration. They'll make you hungry and anxious to cook up
a storm!
